Students film at airbase

5th Sep 2014

Parts of the airbase were transformed this week as students from London’s Met Film School were at Machrihanish shooting some important scenes for their final year project. The short film, entitled ‘Prometheus Rising’ is being filmed in a number of ‘epic’ locations across Scotland, including Glencoe and Skye, as well as Machrihanish.

Set in the future, the plot unfolds in a dystopian society where main character, Adama discovers corruption amongst the wealthy government after receiving a disturbing message from a friend.

Film school student and director, Diana Frose said: ‘We were looking for a location to film a scene involving a rebellious attack on a labour camp at night and Machrihanish Airbase was an ideal setting. The Navy SEALs compound in particular was excellent with the internal cages, we managed to set up a scene where some of the characters were emprisoned.’

A number of local people also got involved on the day (Wednesday 3rd September) and were recruited as extras to be involved in some of the fight and running sequences.

This is not the only interest MACC have received in using the site as a film set. Marketing officer, Claire McFadzean said: ‘We have had a lot of enquiries directed to us through Creative Scotland and Argyll and Bute Council. There has been nothing quite on a blockbuster level, but maybe one day. A crash sequence in eighties film White Nights starring Helen Mirren is our biggest claim to fame at the moment. It would be great if we could top that.’
