MACC has been working closely with members of Campbeltown Running Club in recent weeks to organise a new event for the Kintyre sporting calendar, The MACC Challenge.

Inspired by hard-core obstacle races such as Tough Mudder and Spartan Race, the event held at the former military base will be four miles long and will feature obstacles that make use of some of the airbase’s disused assets, including trenches, bunkers and an outdoor shooting range.

Entries went live on Friday 19th September on Entry Central and the 100 spaces that were available have already been snapped up.

Campbeltown Running Club’s Elaine McGeachy said: ‘We always thought there was scope for an event like this in Kintyre, but we have been overwhelmed by the demand and volume of entries over such a short period of time, entries were full in under a week and we now have a waiting list building up’

The event is purely for enjoyment and there will be no prizes awarded, but participants are guaranteed a lot of fun and a lot of mud. There will be a military theme to the event so those taking part are encouraged to dress up in their best army gear for the occasion.

Elaine continues: ‘The MACC Challenge appeals people of all ages and fitness levels; it is all about having a good time. It is not a race, it will not be timed and we encourage participants to help each other out along the course. That doesn’t mean we won’t make it tough. Prepare to be put through your paces!’

Obstacle race events have been hugely popular worldwide in recent years. Following the success of Tough Mudder across the globe, there are a number of similar events on a smaller scale across Scotland, including Muddy Trials in Kilmarnock and Bing Blazer in West Lothian. CRC and MACC hope to host a number of events on an annual basis in the future, with the course tailored to seasonal weather conditions.

All proceeds from the MACC Challenge will be donated to the Kintyre Kidney Dialysis Campaign; MACC’s chosen charity for this year. Spectators are welcome to come along to cheer on participants. There will be no entry fee for spectators but donation tins for the dialysis group will be circulated.
